Crazy Carl Felker
Where did the name come from?
In 1977 I had a tractor accident that was very serious where the worst of all of the injuries of that accident was my right leg. I had a compound / complex fracture of the tibia and fibula. So I had decided to go to college and take mass media marketing and broadcasting. I was working at the college radio station which was a small radio station that basically only went out to judy the college area since it was only a 10-watt radio station. I took a job at a local radio station, I think it was the largest most popular radio station at that time; it was at KRNY radio station in Kearney, Nebraska. I worked the hour's no one else wanted to work such as Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. I was asked by a local sound company if I would like to go to Lexington, Nebraska and play music on a Friday and Saturday night. The sound company would set up the sound system along with turntables, mixing board and everything needed to do a Live Disc Jockey show. The place wanted a radio station disc jockey and I agreed to do this. Lexington was about 35 miles from Kearney. My brother Jerel worked in Lexington at a pharmacy and he would stop by this bar/restaurant some evenings to drink a beer before he went home. The owners were telling him that they had a disc jockey from KRNY radio station coming to play music for the weekend. Jerel told them that he knew about this because his brother Carl was the disc jockey coming. They then asked Jerel if they could put an ad in the newspaper for me. Jerel said he would ask me. When he asked me I told him that would be ok with me. The next day when he stopped by the bar the owners asked him if he at spoken with me about the ad in the newspaper and he said yes that it would be ok for me for the owners to put an ad in the newspaper that I would be there. Then they asked Jerel what my name was and he told them, Carl Felker. They told him that advertising my name would not mean a lot. Meaning that advertising Carl Felker did not have any excitement or jazz in the ad so they ask Jerel is I was kind of silly or crazy and he said yes that I was silly and crazy. So they asked Jerel if I would be upset if they advertised me as Crazy Carl and Jerel told them that I would probably like that. So that is what they did and this is where the name Crazy Carl came from, it was from someone who had never met or spoken with me. The name of the bar that gave me this name without meeting me was βThe Dirt Cheap Saloonβ in Lexington, Nebraska. This was my first βliveβ performance as a professional disc jockey. This is where the name came from and where I started in my entertainment career, Crazy Carl Disc Jockey / Entertainer.
